Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: How to Choose

Lab-grown diamonds have become one of the most common questions we hear at our Tacoma store. Are they real? Are they worth it? How do they compare to natural diamonds? Here is a clear, honest look at both so you can choose with confidence.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are made of carbon with the same crystal structure as natural diamonds. They have the same hardness, the same sparkle and the same chemical makeup. The difference is where they come from: natural diamonds formed deep in the earth over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment in weeks.

You cannot tell them apart by eye. Even trained jewelers need specialized equipment to identify a lab-grown stone.

Price: The Biggest Difference

A lab-grown diamond typically costs much less than a natural diamond of the same size and quality. That lets many shoppers choose a larger center stone, a better color or clarity grade, or a fancier setting for the same budget.

Value Over Time

Natural diamonds are rare, and they have historically held their value better than lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown prices have dropped as production has grown, and their resale value is generally low. If long-term value or passing a stone down matters most to you, a natural diamond may be the better fit. If you want the most size and sparkle for your money, lab-grown is hard to beat.

Grading and Certification

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are graded on the 4 Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat. Labs such as GIA and IGI issue reports for both, and the report will state clearly whether a stone is natural or laboratory-grown. Always ask for the certificate.

Quick Comparison

  • Appearance: identical to the eye.
  • Durability: identical. Both are diamonds and score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.
  • Price: lab-grown is typically far less for the same specs.
  • Rarity and long-term value: natural diamonds are rarer and tend to hold value better.
  • Certification: both can be graded by GIA or IGI.

Which Should You Choose?

There is no wrong answer. Choose natural if rarity, tradition and long-term value are most important to you. Choose lab-grown if you want a bigger or higher-grade stone for your budget. Many couples compare both side by side before deciding.
